You are very welcome to join us on a tour of the Charnel House in Spitalfields. This was originally the crypt to a chapel in St Augustine Priory and Spital (hospital), dating from the 14th century. Bones from later internments were buried there over the centuries, often the victims of plague or famine. It was rediscovered during building works in the 1990s. The tour will be led by Jane Sidell, Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Historic England.
Outside the Charnel House are a series of stained glass panels giving an account of the area’s history, their lancel shape reflecting the former chapel’s existence. These were designed by fellow Glazier Martin Donlin, and the Clerk will use his notes in telling us about them.
We will go for a drink afterwards (not included in the ticket price) if we pass somewhere that appeals! Please note that there is low headroom at two points of the tour and some steps.
The Master Glazier regretfully sends his apologies for this event.
