It is with a deep sense of sadness and loss that I am writing to you following the death of Past Master Geoffrey Bond OBE, OStJ DL LLD (Hon) RNOM FSA BSc (Econ) who joined the Livery of the Glaziers in 1973 and was our Master in 1997.
Geoffrey was active in the City Civic and was one of the Sheriffs in 2003-04 and is shown in the picture above with his Shrieval Chain. He delighted in being a Sheriff from Nottingham.
Geoffrey was Chairman of the City of London’s Livery Committee in 2007-2010. As well as being a Glazier he was a founder Liveryman of the Arts Scholars’ and its very first Master in 2008. Geoffrey was also a founder member of Bridge Ward Club, and was also active in other liveries including the Solicitors (Court Member 2008-10), Clockmakers as well as being an Honorary Member of the Plumbers and the Educators.
Geoffrey was a leading solicitor and specialised in the corporate and heritage sectors. He lived at Southwell in Nottinghamshire, and it is therefore appropriate that his funeral will take place at 11 am on Wednesday 19 August at Southwell Minster and all are welcome. It is anticipated a memorial service in the City will take place in due course.
If you intend to attend the funeral please let the Clerk know.
A true polymath, Geoffrey was a founder of the National Justice Museum, a Benefactor to the Southwell Music Festival, a Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and was one of the earliest specialist contributors to BBC Television’s ever-popular Antiques Roadshow.
He was particularly known as a Byronist – a pre-eminent expert, speaker and author on the life and works of Lord George Byron, and even lived in Byron’s former home Burgage Manor!
There are so many things one could say about Geoffrey’s achievements, publications and activities – but perhaps a visit to his website https://www.geoffreybondbooks.com/ would amaze you with how much he packed into a full and worthwhile life.
Geoffrey was a man of huge generosity, kindness and warmth and for these qualities alone he will be greatly missed by all of us in the Glaziers.
Geoffrey is survived by his wife Dianora and his daughter Charlotte. We send them our condolences.
Regards
Tim
